Overview

Chitodex is a chitosan-dextran (CD) hydrogel designed as a topical nasal and sinus dressing and a drug delivery vehicle. It is composed of succinyl-chitosan and dextran aldehyde, which cross-link to form a biocompatible, biodegradable biopolymer matrix. The product is FDA-approved for use following endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) to prevent adhesion formation and reduce ostial stenosis. Beyond its role as a surgical dressing, Chitodex is utilized as a platform for the localized, sustained delivery of therapeutics such as budesonide (a corticosteroid) and mupirocin (an antibiotic), specifically for treating recalcitrant chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). The gel provides a physical barrier and a sustained-release platform for localized drug delivery to the sinus mucosa.
