Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Chitooligosaccharides (COS), also known as chitosan oligosaccharides, are low-molecular-weight oligomers of D-glucosamine and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine linked by β-1,4-glycosidic bonds, typically produced by the enzymatic or chemical hydrolysis of chitin or chitosan. Characterized by high water solubility, low viscosity, and excellent biocompatibility, chitooligosaccharides are widely utilized as dietary supplements and nutraceuticals. They exhibit diverse biological activities, including prebiotic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and lipid-lowering properties. Clinical studies have demonstrated that chitooligosaccharide supplementation can modulate the gut microbiota, improve lipid profiles in overweight individuals and patients with coronary heart disease, reduce postprandial blood glucose levels in prediabetic subjects, and potentially inhibit tumor-promoting pathways such as YKL-40 signaling in oncology settings.
