Chitosan is a complex carbohydrate (polysaccharide) derived from the deacetylation of chitin found in the shells of crustaceans such as crabs and shrimp. It is used both as a dietary supplement and in various medical applications. Orally administered, it has been studied for weight loss and cholesterol reduction by binding to dietary fats and reducing their absorption in the gastrointestinal tract. Topically or in medical devices (such as bandages), it promotes hemostasis by adhering to wet tissues and facilitating blood clotting; it also supports wound healing through its antimicrobial properties and ability to promote tissue regeneration[1][2][5]. Chitosan can open tight junctions between epithelial cells by redistributing claudin proteins (CLDNs), thereby increasing epithelial permeability—a property exploited for drug delivery systems[6]. It is also being evaluated for glucose control in prediabetic patients and has applications in dentistry due to its antimicrobial effects[2][5]. Chitosans are recognized for their non-toxicity, low allergenicity, biocompatibility, and biodegradability[8].
