Overview

This modified glass ionomer cement (GIC) is an experimental dental restorative material developed by researchers at Ain Shams University for the treatment of dental caries, particularly in primary molars. The modification involves the incorporation of low molecular weight chitosan, a natural polysaccharide biopolymer, into the liquid phase and titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles into the powder phase of conventional glass ionomer cement. This biomaterial is designed to enhance the antibacterial properties of the cement against cariogenic bacteria such as *Streptococcus mutans* and *Lactobacillus* species, which are primary contributors to dental caries. The material is specifically being evaluated for its clinical performance and antimicrobial efficacy in indirect pulp capping procedures, aiming to reduce secondary caries and improve the longevity of dental restorations in children.
