The Chitosan-hyaluronate gel mixture is an injectable hybrid hydrogel formulation developed by researchers at Ain Shams University for the treatment of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) internal derangement. Specifically targeted at patients with Wilkes Stage III or IV anterior disc displacement without reduction, the gel is administered via intra-articular injection into the upper joint compartment following arthroscopic lysis and lavage. The formulation combines the biocompatible and potentially anti-inflammatory properties of chitosan with the lubricating and viscoelastic benefits of hyaluronic acid (sodium hyaluronate). This combination is intended to act as a superior viscosupplement compared to hyaluronic acid alone, aiming to reduce joint pain, eliminate clicking sounds, and improve maximum mouth opening and lateral jaw movement by restoring joint lubrication and reducing mechanical friction.
