Chitosan-hyaluronate gel mixture

Chitosan-hyaluronate gel mixture is an experimental hybrid viscosuppressant being investigated for the treatment of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) internal derangement, specifically Wilkes Stage III or IV anterior disc displacement without reduction. The formulation combines the lubricating and anti-inflammatory properties of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan in synovial fluid, with chitosan, a biocompatible polysaccharide derived from chitin known for its mucoadhesive and structural properties. This combination is intended to enhance the mechanical stability and residence time of the injection within the joint space following arthroscopic lysis and lavage, thereby reducing pain and improving joint mobility and maximum mouth opening.
