Chitosan-hyaluronate hybrid gel is a self-forming, thermo-responsive hydrogel developed by Ain Shams University for the treatment of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) internal derangement, specifically Wilkes Stage III or IV. The formulation combines chitosan, a natural polysaccharide, with hyaluronic acid (hyaluronate), a key component of synovial fluid. Administered via intra-articular injection following arthroscopic lysis and lavage, the gel transitions into a solid-like state at body temperature. This thermo-responsive property allows for prolonged residence time within the joint space compared to standard hyaluronic acid injections, providing sustained lubrication, reducing pain, and improving joint mobility by addressing the rapid clearance typically seen with liquid injections.
