Chitosan nanoparticulate gel is a localized drug delivery system developed for the treatment of periodontal diseases, specifically stage II periodontitis. It is composed of chitosan, a natural linear polysaccharide derived from the shells of crustaceans, formulated into nanoparticles and suspended in a gel base. Chitosan possesses inherent antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and mucoadhesive properties, which allow it to adhere to the periodontal pocket and interact with pathogenic bacteria. In clinical trial contexts, such as those conducted by Mansoura University, the gel is used either as a standalone adjunctive therapy to mechanical debridement (scaling and root planing) or as a carrier for other therapeutic agents like epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG). The nanoparticulate formulation is designed to provide sustained release of active ingredients, reduce pocket depth, and improve clinical attachment gain in patients with periodontal pockets.
