Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ocupol is a fixed-dose combination ophthalmic and otic formulation containing the broad-spectrum bacteriostatic antibiotic chloramphenicol and the bactericidal lipopeptide antibiotic polymyxin B. Developed by Centaur Pharmaceuticals, Ocupol is approved for the treatment of superficial bacterial infections of the eye (such as bacterial conjunctivitis and blepharitis) and the external ear canal. Chloramphenicol exerts its antibacterial effect by reversibly binding to the bacterial 50S ribosomal subunit, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis. Polymyxin B targets Gram-negative bacteria by binding to lipopolysaccharides (LPS) in the outer membrane, disrupting membrane integrity and leading to cell lysis. Together, these active ingredients provide synergistic, broad-spectrum coverage against common ocular and otic bacterial pathogens.
