ChloraPrep

ChloraPrep is a topical antiseptic solution containing 2% chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) and 70% isopropyl alcohol (IPA). It is widely used for skin preparation prior to surgical procedures or vascular catheterization to reduce the risk of infections. The mechanism of action involves the rapid, broad-spectrum bactericidal activity of isopropyl alcohol through protein denaturation, combined with the persistent antimicrobial effect of chlorhexidine gluconate, which disrupts bacterial cell membranes and walls. In the CLEAN 2 trial, sponsored by Poitiers University Hospital, this specific formulation was evaluated for its efficacy in preventing surgical site infections (SSIs) in patients undergoing major cardiac surgery via sternotomy. The trial results indicated that the CHG-IPA solution was not superior to povidone-iodine-alcohol in reducing reoperation or SSI rates in this specific surgical context.
