ChloraPrep AQ

ChloraPrep AQ is a brand-specific topical antiseptic formulation consisting of 2% w/v chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) in an aqueous (water-based) vehicle. Developed by Becton, Dickinson and Company (BD) following the acquisition of CareFusion and C. R. Bard, this formulation is distinguished from the standard ChloraPrep product by the absence of isopropyl alcohol. It is specifically designed for preoperative skin preparation in clinical settings where alcohol-based solutions are contraindicated or undesirable, such as in neonatal care, on sensitive tissues, or near mucous membranes. The antimicrobial action of ChloraPrep AQ is derived from chlorhexidine's ability to bind to and disrupt microbial cell membranes, leading to the leakage of intracellular components and cell death. It provides broad-spectrum bactericidal activity and is noted for its persistence on the skin, maintaining antimicrobial efficacy for up to 48 hours after application.
