Overview

Chlorcyclizine is a first-generation antihistamine of the phenylpiperazine (diphenylmethylpiperazine) class, primarily used to treat allergy symptoms such as rhinitis, urticaria, and pruritus. It also has antiemetic properties and can be used for symptomatic relief of hay fever and other upper respiratory allergies. In addition to its antihistaminic effects, chlorcyclizine exhibits local anesthetic, anticholinergic, and antiserotonergic activity. Its mechanism of action involves antagonism at the histamine H1 receptor (H1R) sites in peripheral tissues and the central nervous system. Chlorcyclizine is available over-the-counter in some formulations and may cause drowsiness or excitability in children[1][5][6][7].
