Chlorhexidine + chitosan is an investigational bioadhesive gel formulation developed and evaluated by the University of Santiago de Compostela for the management of postoperative complications following oral surgery. This combination therapy leverages the broad-spectrum antiseptic properties of chlorhexidine, a biguanide that disrupts microbial cell membranes, and the mucoadhesive and wound-healing properties of chitosan, a natural biopolymer. The formulation is specifically designed for topical application to the surgical site after mandibular third molar (wisdom tooth) extraction. Clinical studies conducted by the university have assessed its efficacy in reducing microbial colonization on suture threads, alleviating postoperative pain, and accelerating the healing of surgical wounds compared to standard chlorhexidine gels or hyaluronic acid treatments.
