Chlorhexidine and essential oil mouthwashes are antimicrobial oral rinses used for the management of periodontal diseases such as gingivitis and chronic periodontitis. Chlorhexidine is a bisbiguanide antiseptic that provides broad-spectrum antibacterial activity by binding to and disrupting bacterial cell membranes, leading to the leakage of intracellular components and cell death. Essential oil mouthwashes typically contain a combination of phenolic compounds, including thymol, eucalyptol, menthol, and methyl salicylate, which penetrate the plaque biofilm and disrupt bacterial cell walls. In the context of research conducted by Istanbul Medeniyet University, these mouthwashes are being evaluated for their potential cytotoxic effects on the oral epithelium by measuring their impact on the levels of salivary antimicrobial peptides, specifically human beta-defensin 2 (hBD2) and cathelicidin (LL-37).
