Overview

The combination of chlorhexidine and sodium fluoride is a dental formulation primarily used for oral hygiene and prevention of dental issues. This combination leverages the antimicrobial properties of chlorhexidine with the enamel-strengthening benefits of sodium fluoride. Chlorhexidine is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent that reduces plaque formation and gingivitis by binding to oral tissues and providing sustained antibacterial activity for several hours after use[6]. Sodium fluoride promotes remineralization of tooth enamel and helps prevent dental caries[6]. When combined, these active ingredients work synergistically to provide comprehensive oral care. Clinical studies have shown that the combination of chlorhexidine and sodium fluoride in a mouthrinse demonstrates the same clinical effect as chlorhexidine solution alone, with the added benefit of fluoride retention in the oral cavity[1]. This makes it particularly beneficial for patients at risk for both caries and periodontal disease[1].
