Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Chlorhexidine (CHX) mouthwash is a well-established, prescription-strength antiseptic oral rinse widely used in dentistry. As a broad-spectrum biguanide biocide, chlorhexidine acts by adsorbing onto negatively charged components of microbial cell walls and membranes through electrostatic interactions. This binding disrupts cellular membrane integrity, leading to the leakage of intracellular components and, at higher concentrations, the coagulation of cytoplasmic proteins, resulting in cell death. It is considered the gold standard antiseptic for the chemical control of dental plaque and the treatment of plaque-induced gingivitis. In clinical trials, such as those sponsored by Cairo University, CHX mouthwash is frequently utilized as an active control comparator to evaluate the efficacy of novel oral rinses or adjunct therapies to non-surgical periodontal treatments like scaling and root planing.
