Chlorhexidine varnish is an antimicrobial dental coating used to prevent and manage oral complications in orthodontic patients. This specific formulation, evaluated by Khyber Medical University Peshawar, contains 40% chlorhexidine, 36% sandarac (a natural resin), and 24% ethanol. It is applied topically to the buccal surfaces of teeth to reduce the accumulation of dental plaque, prevent the formation of white spot lesions (early enamel demineralization), and mitigate gingival hyperplasia (gum overgrowth) associated with fixed orthodontic appliances. Chlorhexidine acts as a broad-spectrum antiseptic by disrupting bacterial cell membranes, while the sandarac resin provides a sustained-release matrix for the active ingredient.
