Chlorin e6 is a second-generation photosensitizer derived from porphyrins and is used primarily in photodynamic therapy (PDT) for cancer treatment. Upon activation by light (typically around 660 nm), it generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) that induce cell cycle arrest, autophagy, or apoptosis in targeted cells. This mechanism makes it effective against various tumor types including melanoma and other cancers. Chlorin e6 has high ROS generation capacity and deep tissue penetration due to its absorption properties. It is also being explored as a sonosensitizer in sonodynamic therapy and for combination therapies such as chemo-photodynamic therapy[1][4][7].
