Overview

Chlorin e6 meglumine (also referred to as chlorine e6 tris(N-methyl-D-glucamine) salt or KAE) is a second-generation photosensitizer derived from chlorophyll a, currently under development by Kange (Shanghai) Medical Technology and Jilin Connell Pharmaceutical. As a key component of photodynamic therapy (PDT), the drug is designed to selectively accumulate in tumor tissues and dysplastic cells. Upon activation by specific wavelengths of red light (approximately 660-670 nm), the chlorin e6 macrocycle transfers energy to molecular oxygen, generating highly reactive singlet oxygen. This localized oxidative stress induces cell death via apoptosis and necrosis, and causes microvascular occlusion within the targeted lesion. KAE is specifically being investigated for the treatment of high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN2-3), offering a potentially less invasive alternative to surgical interventions like conization.
