Overview

Chlormerodrin Hg-197 is a radiopharmaceutical diagnostic agent consisting of the organomercurial compound chlormerodrin labeled with the radioactive isotope mercury-197. Historically, it was utilized in nuclear medicine for scintigraphic imaging, particularly for the localization of brain tumors and for renal cortical scanning to evaluate kidney structure and function. The agent functions by accumulating in the renal tubules through binding to sulfhydryl groups and by localizing in brain lesions where the blood-brain barrier is compromised. While the non-radiolabeled form of chlormerodrin was previously used as a diuretic for heart failure, the radiolabeled version has been largely superseded by technetium-99m-based imaging agents due to their superior imaging characteristics and lower radiation burden.
