Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Chloroaluminum phthalocyanine (ClAlPc) is a second-generation lipophilic photosensitizer belonging to the phthalocyanine class, widely investigated for photodynamic therapy (PDT) and antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT). Upon activation by red light (typically in the 660–680 nm range), ClAlPc transfers energy to molecular oxygen, generating highly cytotoxic singlet oxygen and other reactive oxygen species (ROS). This induces localized oxidative stress, leading to cell death via apoptosis, necrosis, or autophagy, as well as vascular disruption and immune system activation. Due to its high hydrophobicity, ClAlPc is commonly formulated in nanocarriers such as nanoemulsions, liposomes, or polymeric nanoparticles to improve solubility and cellular uptake. It has been evaluated in clinical trials as an adjunctive treatment for periodontitis and peri-implantitis, and is in preclinical development for various cancers, including breast cancer, melanoma, and glioblastoma, as well as cutaneous leishmaniasis.
