chlorocresol

Chlorocresol is a chlorinated phenolic compound with potent disinfectant and antiseptic properties. Chemically known as 4-chloro-3-methylphenol or p-chloro-m-cresol (PCMC), it appears as a pinkish white crystalline solid with a phenolic odor. Chlorocresol is widely used for skin disinfection and wound care and serves as a preservative in creams and other water-containing preparations for external use. It is also an active ingredient in various veterinary medicines for topical, oral, and parenteral administration. Its antimicrobial action stems from its ability to disrupt microbial cell membranes, inhibiting the growth of both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria as well as fungi[1][5][7]. The compound was first introduced as a bactericide in 1897 by Kalle & Co., following discoveries about the efficacy of substituted phenols[7].
