chloroprednisone

Chloroprednisone is a synthetic topical glucocorticoid and a chlorinated derivative of prednisone. It was first reported in 1960 and developed primarily as an anti-inflammatory agent for topical use. The acetate ester prodrug form, known as chloroprednisone 21-acetate, was marketed under the brand name Topilan. Its mechanism of action involves agonism at the glucocorticoid receptor (GR), leading to inhibition of pro-inflammatory signals and promotion of anti-inflammatory effects. However, its clinical utility may have been limited by low activity on the skin due to insufficient activation by local enzymes such as 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase[1][2][3].
