Overview

A combination of chloroquine (CQ) and gold sodium thiomalate (GST), both of which are disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory conditions. These drugs work through different mechanisms to suppress inflammation. Chloroquine reduces IL-1β mRNA expression and inhibits phosphorylation of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) p38, while gold sodium thiomalate inhibits IL-1β secretion by interfering with posttranslational IL-1β processing through selective inhibition of interleukin-1 converting enzyme (ICE)/caspase-1. The combination has been studied for its potential synergistic effects in reducing cytokine production and inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis.
