Chlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic (commonly called a "water pill") used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and edema (fluid retention) associated with conditions such as congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis, kidney disease, or fluid retention caused by corticosteroid or estrogen therapy. It works primarily by inhibiting sodium and chloride reabsorption in the distal convoluted tubule of the nephron in the kidneys, leading to increased excretion of sodium, chloride, water, potassium, magnesium, phosphate, and bicarbonate. This diuretic effect reduces blood volume and helps lower blood pressure. Chlorothiazide may also cause arteriolar dilation. Additional uses include management of diabetes insipidus and prevention of kidney stones in patients with hypercalcemia[1][3][4][9].
