Chloroxine is a synthetic antibacterial compound and quinoline derivative used primarily for the treatment of dandruff and mild to moderately severe seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp. It is available in topical formulations such as shampoos (e.g., Capitrol) and creams (e.g., Valpeda, Triaderm), as well as oral formulations (notably under the brand name Endiaron) for infectious diarrhea and disorders of intestinal microflora. Chloroxine exhibits bacteriostatic, fungistatic, and antiprotozoal properties; it is effective against Streptococci, Staphylococci, Candida species (including C. albicans), Shigella species, and Trichomonads. The precise mechanism of action is not fully understood but may involve inhibition of mitotic activity in the epidermis to reduce excessive scaling or induction of genotoxic effects in bacteria via SOS-DNA repair pathways[1][4][5][7]. Chloroxine was first synthesized in 1888.
