Chlorphenesin carbamate is a centrally acting skeletal muscle relaxant used for the symptomatic treatment of painful muscle spasm. It is a small molecule drug and the carbamate ester derivative of chlorphenesin. The drug acts primarily within the central nervous system (CNS), where it depresses spinal neuron activity, likely through slight hyperpolarization and/or prolongation of the refractory period in primary afferent terminals and motoneurons. This results in reduced transmission of nerve impulses involved in muscle contraction and pain sensation. Chlorphenesin carbamate also exhibits some antifungal and antibacterial properties but is mainly used for its muscle relaxant effects[1][6][7]. Its exact mechanism of action remains incompletely understood but does not involve direct action on skeletal muscles[6][7]. First approved in 1965, it has been marketed under several brand names including Maolate and Musil[4][7].
