Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Chlortalidon (chlorthalidone) is a long-acting thiazide-like diuretic primarily used to treat hypertension and edema associated with congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and renal disorders. It works by inhibiting the sodium-chloride symporter (NCC) in the distal convoluted tubule of the nephron, thereby reducing sodium and chloride reabsorption and promoting diuresis. Additionally, chlortalidon acts as an inhibitor of various carbonic anhydrase isoforms, which contributes to its long half-life (40 to 60 hours) due to extensive binding to erythrocyte carbonic anhydrase. Originally developed by Geigy (now Novartis) and approved in 1960, it is widely distributed in Germany by Mibe Arzneimittel.
