Overview

Cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3) in combination with artificial tears is being investigated by the University of Faisalabad for the treatment of non-Sjögren dry eye syndrome in patients with vitamin D deficiency. Cholecalciferol is a fat-soluble vitamin that, upon conversion to its active form calcitriol, binds to the Vitamin D receptor (VDR). This interaction is thought to exert anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative effects, potentially improving tear film stability and reducing ocular surface inflammation. In this clinical context, an oral dose of 6000 IU/day is administered alongside conventional topical artificial tears to evaluate synergistic improvements in ocular parameters such as tear breakup time (TBUT) and Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) scores.
