Overview

Cholecystokinin tetrapeptide (CCK-4) is a synthetic tetrapeptide fragment corresponding to the four C-terminal amino acids of the endogenous hormone cholecystokinin. It is used in research as a panicogenic probe, as intravenous administration reliably induces panic- and anxiety-like symptoms in humans, particularly in healthy volunteers and individuals with panic disorder. The panic-like symptoms are thought to arise through direct or indirect activation of central cholecystokinin receptors and related neuronal pathways. CCK-4 is not used therapeutically or diagnostically in clinical medicine, but rather as a tool compound for modeling panic attacks in neuropsychiatric research and for evaluation of anxiolytic drugs[1][3][4][5][6].
