Overview

Dukoral is an oral inactivated vaccine used for active immunization against disease caused by *Vibrio cholerae* serogroup O1. It contains killed whole *V. cholerae* O1 bacteria (including both Inaba and Ogawa serotypes and El Tor and Classical biotypes) and a recombinant non-toxic B subunit of the cholera toxin. The vaccine works by inducing antibodies in the intestine that target both the bacterial components and the toxin B subunit, preventing colonization of *V. cholerae* O1 on the intestinal wall as well as neutralizing the effects of cholera toxin. This immune response helps protect against infection by blocking attachment of bacteria and toxins to gut cells[1][2][5]. Dukoral is primarily indicated for travelers visiting areas where there is a risk of epidemic or endemic cholera[1][2]. It also provides some cross-protection against diarrhea caused by enterotoxigenic *Escherichia coli* (ETEC) producing heat-labile enterotoxin due to structural similarity with the cholera toxin B subunit[6].
