Overview

Cholic acid is a naturally occurring primary bile acid produced in the liver. It plays a key role in facilitating fat absorption and cholesterol excretion by acting as a detergent to emulsify dietary fats. Pharmaceutical cholic acid is used for the treatment of bile acid synthesis disorders due to single enzyme defects and as adjunctive therapy for peroxisomal disorders (including Zellweger spectrum disorders) in patients with manifestations of liver disease or complications from decreased fat-soluble vitamin absorption. Its mechanism of action involves normalizing bile acid production and restoring physiological levels of primary bile acids in patients with genetic deficiencies[1][2][4][9].
