Choline is an essential nutrient that serves as a precursor for the neurotransmitter acetylcholine and is a key component in the synthesis of phospholipids such as phosphatidylcholine and sphingomyelin, which are vital for cell membrane integrity and function. Choline plays critical roles in nerve conduction throughout the central nervous system, liver function, fat metabolism (preventing excessive fat accumulation in the liver), gallbladder regulation, and methyl group donation via its metabolite betaine. It is also necessary for normal brain development and maintenance of cell structure. Choline deficiency can lead to fatty liver disease, high blood pressure, kidney dysfunction, stunted growth, and neurological disorders. Supplementation has been used to mitigate effects of Parkinsonism and tardive dyskinesia[1][5][6].
