Choline-stabilized orthosilicic acid (ch-OSA) is a bioavailable complex of silicon and choline developed by Bio Minerals NV. It is primarily utilized as a nutraceutical to support the health of connective tissues, including skin, hair, nails, and bone. The compound consists of orthosilicic acid stabilized by choline to prevent polymerization, thereby ensuring optimal absorption in the gastrointestinal tract. Its biological mechanism involves the stimulation of collagen type I synthesis in osteoblast-like cells and skin fibroblasts, as well as the modulation of cartilage degradation biomarkers such as C-terminal telopeptide of type II collagen (CTX-II) and cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP). Clinical research has evaluated ch-OSA for symptomatic relief in knee osteoarthritis, where it has shown gender-specific efficacy in improving physical function and reducing stiffness in men, as well as for its potential benefits in osteopenia and peri-implantitis.
