Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Chondroitin sulfate is a natural biomacromolecule belonging to the class of glycosaminoglycans, which are unbranched complex polysaccharides. It is a major component of the extracellular matrix (ECM), where it constitutes an essential component of proteoglycans. Chondroitin sulfate is available as both a pharmaceutical-grade drug and a dietary supplement. It is primarily used for the treatment of osteoarthritis, where it is considered a symptomatic slow-acting drug (SYSADOA) due to its anti-inflammatory activity, its ability to stimulate the synthesis of proteoglycans and hyaluronic acid, and its role in decreasing the catabolic activity of chondrocytes. It has also shown serendipitous clinical and histopathological improvement in patients with psoriasis.
