chondroitin sulfate-iron colloid

**Chondroitin sulfate-iron colloid** is an intravenous colloidal ferric-iron preparation in which iron colloid is stabilized by chondroitin sulfate. It was marketed in Japan as **Blutal** for treatment of iron deficiency anemia, including use as parenteral iron support in hemodialysis-associated anemia. The colloid delivers iron for utilization in hemoglobin synthesis and replenishment of iron stores. Its paramagnetic ferric iron and preferential uptake by the hepatic reticuloendothelial system, including Kupffer cells, also enabled investigational use as an MRI contrast agent for liver lesion and hepatocellular carcinoma imaging. Blutal was subject to a Japanese Class II recall in July 2006 following increased reports of drug eruptions after a change in the chondroitin sulfate raw-material source.
