Overview

CHPP with cisplatin is a specialized regional chemotherapy protocol developed by the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center for the treatment of pediatric patients with refractory peritoneal and retroperitoneal neoplasms. The procedure involves Continuous Hyperthermic Peritoneal Perfusion (CHPP), also known as Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC), where a solution containing the platinum-based alkylating agent cisplatin is heated to approximately 41-42.5°C and circulated through the abdominal cavity for 90 minutes following cytoreductive surgery. This approach aims to maximize the local concentration of chemotherapy and exploit the synergistic cytotoxic effects of hyperthermia on cancer cells while minimizing systemic toxicity. To further protect against systemic side effects, sodium thiosulfate is typically administered intravenously to neutralize any cisplatin that enters the bloodstream.
