Drug intelligence / Profile preview
*Christensenella minuta* is a species of gut bacteria being developed as a next-generation probiotic or live biotherapeutic product (LBP). [4] This Gram-negative, anaerobic bacterium is strongly associated with leanness and metabolic health in humans. [4, 5] It is under investigation for its therapeutic potential in a range of conditions including obesity, metabolic diseases, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), liver fibrosis, and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). One specific product, coded Xla1, has completed a Phase 1 clinical trial for obesity and metabolic disorders. [3, 8] The proposed mechanisms of action are multi-faceted and include the production of beneficial short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) like butyrate, modulation of the host's immune system by inhibiting pathways such as NF-κB, enhancement of gut barrier integrity, and regulation of metabolic pathways through the gut-liver and gut-brain axes. [4, 12]
