Overview

Chromic nitrate (chromium(III) nitrate) is an inorganic compound with the formula Cr(NO3)3. It is primarily used as a supplement to intravenous solutions for total parenteral nutrition (TPN), where it helps maintain chromium serum levels and prevent depletion of endogenous stores and subsequent deficiency symptoms[1][2]. Chromium plays a role in maintaining normal glucose metabolism and peripheral nerve function by increasing insulin binding to cells and modulating cholesterol efflux[2][8]. Chromic nitrate also finds industrial use in the preparation of chrome catalysts, textile printing operations, dyeing industry applications, pickling processes, surface treatment, and as a corrosion inhibitor[6]. Chromic nitrate is regulated as a hazardous substance due to its potential toxicity; exposure can cause irritation or burns to skin and eyes, respiratory issues if inhaled, allergic reactions on skin contact, and possible kidney damage[3]. It is not typically marketed under brand names for pharmaceutical use but may be supplied by chemical manufacturers for laboratory or industrial purposes.
