Overview

Chromic phosphate P-32 (marketed under the brand name Phosphocol P-32) is an FDA-approved therapeutic radiopharmaceutical used in oncology. It consists of chromic phosphate labeled with phosphorus-32 (P-32), a radioactive isotope of phosphorus that emits high-energy beta particles (electrons) with a half-life of approximately 14.3 days and a tissue penetration range of 3–8 mm. The drug is administered via intracavitary instillation (intraperitoneally or intrapleurally) for the treatment of peritoneal or pleural effusions caused by metastatic disease, and can be injected interstitially for ovarian and prostatic carcinomas. It has also been used intravenously for chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), and the palliative treatment of bone metastases. Its therapeutic effect is mediated by beta radiation, which induces DNA double-strand breaks in rapidly dividing cancer cells, thereby inhibiting tumor growth. The commercial product was discontinued by its manufacturer (Covidien/Mallinckrodt) in 2008–2009.
