Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Chromium(III) propionate complex is a coordination compound consisting of trivalent chromium (Cr3+) and three molecules of propionic acid (propanoate ligands). It appears as a green powder that is easily soluble in water[2]. Chromium in the trivalent state is an essential trace element involved in glucose and lipid metabolism. The compound acts as a source of bioavailable trivalent chromium and has been used primarily as a dietary supplement or feed additive to improve glucose tolerance, enhance insulin sensitivity by promoting the action of insulin at its receptor, regulate lipid metabolism (including cholesterol synthesis and elimination), support protein synthesis in the liver, alleviate stress responses by modulating glucocorticoid levels, and strengthen immune function[2]. Its mechanism involves acting as part of the so-called "glucose tolerance factor" (GTF), which facilitates insulin binding to cell receptors and increases tissue uptake of glucose. Chromium supplementation with this compound has been shown to improve carcass quality in animals by increasing lean meat content while reducing fat deposition[2].
