Overview

Chromium-51 labeled red blood cells (51Cr RBCs) are a diagnostic radiopharmaceutical tool used primarily in clinical research to evaluate the recovery and survival of red blood cells in the circulatory system. The procedure involves labeling a sample of autologous red blood cells with the radioactive isotope chromium-51, which binds to the globin chains of hemoglobin. Once re-infused, the survival of these cells is monitored by measuring radioactivity in blood samples over time. This methodology has been the gold standard for over 50 years in validating new blood storage systems and preparation processes. In research conducted by Dr. Jose Cancelas at the Hoxworth Blood Center and the University of Cincinnati, 51Cr-labeled RBCs are used as a reference standard in Phase 1 studies to compare the performance of alternative, non-radioactive labeling methods such as biotinylation (BioRBC).
