Overview

Chromium Cr-51 is a synthetic radioactive isotope of the element chromium, with a half-life of approximately 27.7 days. It decays by electron capture, emitting gamma rays (0.32 MeV). Chromium Cr-51 is primarily used as a diagnostic radiopharmaceutical agent in medicine and research. In clinical practice, it is used to label red blood cells for measuring their mass or volume, studying red blood cell survival time and sequestration, evaluating blood loss, diagnosing gastrointestinal bleeding, and labeling platelets for survival studies. In nephrology, it helps determine glomerular filtration rate. Chromium Cr-51 is also widely used in laboratory assays such as cytotoxicity studies (chromium release assays) to quantify immune cell-mediated lysis of target cells[1][2][4][5][7].
