Chromium nicotinate is a small molecule compound used primarily as a dietary supplement to treat or prevent chromium deficiency and for nutritional support in patients who cannot eat normally. It is also known as "chromium polynicotinate" or "niacin-bound chromium," and consists of trivalent chromium (Cr3+) bound to three molecules of nicotinic acid. Chromium is an essential trace mineral involved in the regulation of glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity. Its mechanism involves potentiating insulin signaling by enhancing the activity of the insulin receptor and downstream effectors such as PI3K and Akt, leading to increased translocation of GLUT-4 transporters to the cell membrane and improved glucose uptake in muscle cells. Chromium supplementation has been studied for use in conditions associated with diabetes mellitus type 2[1][2][5].
