Overview

Chromium yeast is an organic form of trivalent chromium (Cr3+) produced by fermenting *Saccharomyces cerevisiae* in a chromium-rich medium. It is primarily investigated as a dietary supplement for improving glycemic control and insulin sensitivity in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome. Trivalent chromium is believed to act as a cofactor that potentiates the action of insulin, potentially by enhancing insulin receptor binding or improving post-receptor signaling pathways. Clinical studies have demonstrated that supplementation with chromium yeast can significantly reduce markers of oxidative stress, such as thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), and increase the activity of antioxidant enzymes like glutathione peroxidase. It has been evaluated both as a monotherapy and in combination with antioxidant vitamins such as vitamin C and vitamin E to counteract the deleterious effects of chronic hyperglycemia.
