Overview

Chromous sulfate is an inorganic compound with the formula CrSO4, representing the divalent (chromium(II)) form of chromium combined with sulfate. It is primarily used as a supplement in intravenous solutions for total parenteral nutrition (TPN) to maintain adequate serum chromium levels and prevent deficiency symptoms[1][2]. Chromium plays a role in normal glucose metabolism and peripheral nerve function by enhancing insulin binding to cells and improving glucose utilization[2][3]. Chromous sulfate itself is not widely used as a pharmaceutical agent but may be encountered as an analytical reagent or industrial chemical. Its mechanism of action relates to its ability to provide bioavailable trivalent chromium, which acts as a cofactor for insulin signaling pathways. Industrially, different forms of chromium sulfates are also used in tanning, dyeing, and other chemical processes[6].
