Chronogesic

Chronogesic is an investigational implantable drug delivery system developed by DURECT Corporation for the treatment of moderate-to-severe chronic pain. The system utilizes DURECT's proprietary DUROS technology, which consists of a small titanium cylinder (4 mm in diameter and 4.4 cm in length) containing an osmotic engine. This engine, powered by a sodium chloride tablet, enables the constant, zero-order subcutaneous delivery of sufentanil, a potent small molecule opioid analgesic, over an extended period of 60 to 90 days or more. Sufentanil works by binding to opioid receptors in the central nervous system, thereby inhibiting the release of pain neurotransmitters and producing analgesia. While initially licensed to Endo Pharmaceuticals in 2002, the rights were returned to DURECT in 2008, and the program has since been discontinued.
