Overview

Chrysanthemum + Chinese wolfberry is a traditional herbal combination widely consumed as a health beverage in East Asia, particularly China. The two main ingredients are the flower heads of Chrysanthemum morifolium (chrysanthemum) and the fruit of Lycium barbarum (Chinese wolfberry or goji berry). This combination is typically prepared as an infusion or tea. Research indicates that this blend exhibits significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, with synergistic effects observed at a 1:1 ratio of chrysanthemum to wolfberry. The mechanisms are attributed to phenolic compounds from chrysanthemum (such as acacetin-7-O-rutinoside, luteolin-7-O-glucoside, chlorogenic acid) and polysaccharides from wolfberry. These act via multiple pathways including inhibition of MAPKs (ERK and JNK) and NF-κB signaling in inflammatory cells. Traditionally, this combination is used for liver protection, improving eyesight, clearing heat/toxins from the body, supporting immune function, promoting skin health due to its carotenoid content (notably zeaxanthin), reducing inflammation, balancing blood pressure/lipids, aiding digestion/constipation relief due to fiber content in wolfberry/burdock blends[1][2][4][5]. It is not considered a pharmaceutical drug but rather a dietary supplement or functional food.
