Overview

**Chrysanthemum extract** is derived from the flowers and aerial parts of various species in the genus *Chrysanthemum*, most notably *Chrysanthemum morifolium* and *Chrysanthemum indicum*. It is widely used in traditional medicine across Asia for its reputed benefits in treating fever, inflammation, hypertension, angina, and infectious diseases. Preclinical and early clinical studies suggest several bioactive properties including antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, immunomodulatory, neuroprotective, antiosteoporotic, antidiabetic, antihyperlipidemic, anti-atherosclerotic, antiviral, and antiadipogenic effects[1][3][5][7]. The extract includes a complex mixture of phytochemicals such as polyphenols (flavonoids, phenolic acids), terpenoids (including sesquiterpenes), alkaloids, carotenoids, and volatile oils. Antioxidant activity is predominantly ascribed to high flavonoid and phenolic acid content. Mechanistically, anti-inflammatory effects involve inhibition of nitric oxide production and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α); antiadipogenic effects are mediated via downregulation of PPAR-γ, CEBP-α, and FAS. Some extracts demonstrate cytotoxicity toward cancer cell lines, reversal of multidrug resistance, anti-angiogenic effects, and antiviral activities against viruses such as HIV-1, HBV, HSV-1, and RSV[3][5]. Clinical evidence is limited but suggests possible neuroprotective and uric acid-lowering effects; the extract has not been approved as a pharmaceutical for any indication.
