Overview

Chuanxiong is the dried rhizome of Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort., a perennial herb in the Apiaceae family. It is a widely used traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) ingredient known for its ability to invigorate blood circulation and promote Qi movement. In TCM practice, it is primarily prescribed for conditions involving blood stasis such as irregular menstruation, dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, postpartum abdominal pain, headaches (especially those due to wind or blood stagnation), and certain types of pain and numbness[6][8][9]. Modern pharmacological studies have identified key active compounds including tetramethylpyrazine (ligustrazine), Z-ligustilide, senkyunolide A, ferulic acid and various phthalides[2][4][5]. These constituents contribute to its vasorelaxant effects on blood vessels; anti-inflammatory; antioxidant; analgesic; antibacterial; neuroprotective properties[3][4][5][7]. Tetramethylpyrazine in particular has been studied for stroke and cardiovascular indications. The herb is commonly used alone or as part of multi-herb formulas for migraine/headache relief and gynecological disorders[5]. Caution is advised during pregnancy or with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs due to potential bleeding risk[1][6].
