Overview

Chung A Won is a traditional Korean polyherbal formulation (Hanbang) primarily developed and investigated for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis. The formulation is typically composed of extracts from *Eucommia ulmoides* (Duchung), *Psoralea corylifolia* (Boh-gol-zhee), Walnut (*Juglans sinensis* or *regia*), and Ginger (*Zingiber officinale*). Its therapeutic mechanism involves a dual action on bone metabolism: it stimulates the differentiation of osteoblasts to promote bone formation and inhibits the activity of osteoclasts to reduce bone resorption. The formulation contains various bioactive phytochemicals, including phytoestrogens like bavachin, which act as estrogen receptor agonists to support bone mineral density. Clinical research, including a Phase 2 trial (NCT02592161) conducted at Daejeon University, has evaluated its efficacy in improving T-scores and alleviating bone loss symptoms in women over the age of 50.
